What a difficult decision, do I start with number one and work my way to number five or start at the bottom of my top five and work my way to number one? Starting with number one wins out because it is just too irresistible not to. BAR LOLA. If you have not been to this astonishing Munjoy Hill eatery, which opened in 2006, then go. And then go again and again. The menu changes and you’ll want to experience every change.
There are three ways to enjoy Bar Lola’s menu, which consists of small, medium, salad, large and sweet. One way is to order random items that you fancy and make your own courses. The next is to choose one item from each category for $36. The last and most special way is to choose Feed Me. Feed Me is a very reasonable $40 and the chef selects one item from each category and a couple of extra for good measure. All his favorites of the night, what an incredible treat! And they will do a vegetarian Feed Me without blinking an eye, the service is simple and sublime – they aim to please. The owners are attentive to every detail and remember repeat diners.
Here’s a sample of their fare: Handmade brioche with crispy mortadella and a fried farm egg. Smoked trout and arugula salad with Maine potatoes and shaved red onion. I promise, you cannot go wrong. To see the entire current menu: www.barlola.net
This is a great place to pop in and have a drink and a couple of courses too if you aren’t up for the full experience. They have a sweet (but small) bar area and a good wine selection as well as a creative drink menu. Go early when they’re not yet crowded if this is your plan. Travel and Leisure has named Bar Lola one of their favorite small places to eat and they have been written up in Food and Wine. It’s very cozy and the decor is simple and warm, very up to date.
So there you have it, my number one date night restaurant, Bar Lola Portland, Maine
